Possible contributions of the Smart Cities

Possible contributions of the Smart Cities

In the previous post we talked about some ideas about how Big Data and IoT can contribute to the intelligent development of the city. However, it is worth exploring some more areas:

  • Big data can help reduce emissions and reduce pollution.
  • The sensors installed on the roads will measure the total traffic at different times of the day and the total emissions.
  • The data can be sent to a central unit that will coordinate with the traffic police.
  • Traffic can be managed or diverted along other less congested areas to reduce carbon emissions in a particular area.
  • The environment will be cooler and greener, consuming less energy.
  • Using a wireless network generates less energy than traditional Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Therefore, the batteries in mobile devices will last longer and there will be less need to charge the devices frequently.
  • Through the sensors installed in the buildings of the city, they will be able to observe the vibrations and conditions of the materials in buildings, bridges and historical construction, making the cities safer in the event of a disaster.
  • Also, water leaks can be easily detected and corrected.
  • The existing sound can be monitored in real time in the central areas of the city, thus improving the quality of life of citizens.
  • The great automation of data and the advancement in data visualization systems allow to create a citizen information system. This system will show how people flow through real-time traffic maps and make life safer for citizens.

This is not something that will be done overnight, since citizen participation is of vital importance in order to adapt all the needs of the city to their interaction.

In the near future each house will have garbage disposal units and the garbage will be sucked from them to the garbage treatment centers.

The smart energy network measures the presence of people in a particular area at a given time and, accordingly, can adjust the street lights. As well as detect when a citizen is missing or in danger, to be able to send real-time alerts to specific security agencies.

Just as smart energy networks will ensure that areas that are sparsely populated will automatically have some of the street lights turned off. This will result in a lot of energy savings.
